Whether hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, or rock climbing, find your adventure along our roads and trails! Custer State Park's is a playground for exploration.  A herd of 1,300 bison roams freely throughout the park, often stopping traffic along the 18-mile Wildlife Loop Road. The herd is one of the largest publically-owned herds in the world.  Custer State Park in the Black Hills encompasses 71,000 acres of beautiful terrain and an abundance of wildlife.  The main attraction is the buffalo, but visitors can also see pronghorn, prairie dogs, elk, deer, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, mountain lions and burros.  Several lakes and streams are available for fishing in Custer State Park. Fishermen will find trout, bass, northern pike, pan fish and more. The Black Hills Playhouse is one of the oldest, continuously operated theater companies in the nation. Each summer the playhouse produces high-quality, live performances featuring musicals, comedy and drama.  View the granite spires on Needle's Highway. Drive through tunnels and over the unique "Pigtail Bridge" on Iron Mountain Road. Get up-close and personal with buffalo and other animals on Wildlife Loop Road.  Custer State Park is home to several unique buildings and landmarks. Get a bird's-eye view from the Mount Coolidge Fire tower, discover the history at the Gordon Stockade, or tour The Badger Hole.  Custer State Park's 71,000 acres offer a lifetime of hiking opportunities. Besides the designated trails described below, hiking is allowed anywhere in Custer State Park.  Two trailheads within Custer State Park mark trails leading to Harney Peak and into the Harney Range Trail System.  These trails begin in Custer State Park and enter the Black Hills National Forest and Black Elk Wilderness on their way to the summit.  Feel the thunder and join the herd at the 48th Annual Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup in the fall. Watch cowboys and cowgirls as they roundup and drive the herd of approximately 1,300 buffalo.
