Annual Buffalo Roundup and Arts Festival

Friday, September 29, 2017

Feel the thunder and join the herd at the Annual Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup. Watch cowboys and cowgirls as they roundup and drive the herd of approximately 1,300 buffalo (number of animals vary depending on rangeland conditions). Not only is the roundup a spectacular sight to see, it is also a critical management tool in maintaining a strong and healthy herd.

Following the roundup, stay and watch park staff sort, brand and vaccinate the herd in preparation for the fall buffalo sale.

ARTS FESTIVAL

At the 21st Annual Buffalo Roundup Arts Festival, up to 150 vendors will offer for sale their fine arts and crafts including many South Dakota made products.

Start your morning with a pancake feed and enjoy on-going Western and Native American entertainment under the big top. The first two days are held on the festival grounds across from the Peter Norbeck Visitor Center. On the third day, a limited number of vendors set up their wares at the Buffalo Corrals. It's a South Dakota experience you won't want to miss!

Halloween Hike

October 27-28, 2017

Take a 1.5-mile guided hike along a paved trail and meet costumed characters that portray natural history about various plants, animals or people living in the Black Hills. Each hike will start at the Peter Norbeck Visitor Center and travel to the Game Lodge Campground where characters are staged at various campsites to act out humorous skits.

Each hike will be led by a guide and lasts approximately one hour. The event is suitable for families with young children and is educational without the spookiness of Halloween. With the trail lit only by jack-o-lanterns and tiki torches, hikers will enjoy the sights, sounds and night life of Custer State Park.

Hikes depart every 15 minutes starting at 5:30 p.m. MT with the last hike departing at 8 p.m. each night. Reservations are required.
